Lawn & garden care: questions to ask before you hire
For regular care, what matters most is what's included in each visit and how you stop.
For lawn & garden care
- What's included in each visit: mowing, edging, blowing, hauling clippings away?
- How often will you come, and what happens if it rains on my day?
- Is it a contract, or can I stop any time?
- What do you use on weeds and lawns? Is it safe for kids and pets?
- Do you do seasonal jobs too, like pruning, aeration or fall clean-ups?
Ask every contractor
- Do you have a business licence that covers my city? Can I see it?
- Can you send me a WorkSafeBC clearance letter? It means I'm not on the hook if one of your crew is hurt on my property.
- Do you have liability insurance? Can I see the certificate?
- Can I get the quote in writing, broken down into materials and labour?
- How much is the deposit, and when are the other payments due? (Be wary of a big payment up front.)
- When can you start, and how long will the job take?
- Who will actually do the work: your own crew or subcontractors?
- Does the job need a permit, and who gets it?
- What warranty do you give, on materials and on your work? Can I have it in writing?
- Can I see photos of similar jobs you've done recently, or talk to a past customer?
- How do you leave the site at the end of each day, and when the job's done?
